Randolph College requires all employees liable for executing responsibilities within our Sexual Misconduct Policies to participate in on-line and in-person training opportunities. Training varies by person and their respective duties. Training topics are diverse and support growing trends and data in the field.

Provided trainings during the 2020 calendar year include but are not limited to the following:

Investigator Training – Title IX Investigation Training with the National Association of Clery Compliance Officers and Professionals (NACCOP)

Training Description provided by NACCOP: The class is designed for campus administrators and investigators who have responsibility for conducting and overseeing sexual misconduct investigations under the auspices of Title IX on their college campuses. The class is based on a Trauma Informed Approach and will focus on the neurobiological impact of trauma, the influence of societal myths and stereotypes, understanding perpetrator behavior with a goal of learning to conduct effective investigations. Attendees will learn how to manage and investigate a complaint of sexual misconduct, from sexual harassment to sexual assault, in higher education from start to finish with special emphasis on complying with the Clery Act and 1997 through current guidance from the Office of Civil Rights

Hearing Panel (Decision Maker) Training – Constructing the Live Hearing Process with the National Association of Clery Compliance Officers and Professionals (NACCOP)

Training Description provided by NACCOP: “Topics will include an overview of the requirements related to the hearing process; selection and training of decision makers; in person vs. virtual hearings; building and facilitating a hearing agenda; managing hearing participants; considerations in selecting institutional advisors; bias, questioning and cross-examination; evaluating relevant evidence; making a finding; specific considerations regarding employee cases; and the appeal process.”

Training Description provided by NACCOP: “This class is designed for campus administrators and investigators who have responsibility for conducting and overseeing Title IX compliance and sexual misconduct investigations on their college campuses. Attendees will learn how to manage and fully investigate a complaint of sexual misconduct, from sexual harassment to sexual assault, in higher education from start to finish with special emphasis on complying with the VAWA requirements of the Clery Act and guidance from the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (the class includes all of the new guidance released by OCR in May 2020).”

The Trauma of Sexual Assault: Experience, Behavior, and Memory with the VA Department of Criminal Justice (DCJS) in partnership with the Virginia Victim Assistance Network

Training Description provided by DCJS: “Traumatic experiences have powerful effects on the human brain. This presentation explains how trauma can alter brain functioning during sexual assault, and alter the encoding and storage of memories in ways that are commonly misunderstood by many who work with victims of sexual assault. Participants will learn about the key brain circuitries impacted by stress and trauma, including the prefrontal cortex and defense and memory circuitries. Participants will gain increased understanding of brain-based experiences, behaviors, and memory characteristics that will enhance their work with victims of sexual assault and other violence. This presentation provides a critical foundation for learning and applying trauma-informed responses with people who have been sexually assaulted.”

Resident Assistants and Head Residents

All students employed by the Office of Residence Life receive annual training on bystander intervention, mandated reporting, and the Clery Act.

Students and Employee Training and Awareness

All faculty and staff at hire receive and are required to complete Building a Supportive Community on-line training with Everfi. Periodically, they receive additional follow-up sexual misconduct training.

All first year and transfer students are required to complete the Sexual Assault Prevention for Undergrads online training with Everfi, along with a course called Alcohol Edu for College. Graduate students are required to complete the Sexual Assault Prevention for Grad Students online training with at the start of their program. Students are required to repeat the Sexual Assault Prevention course as a refresher training at the beginning of their third year.

All student athletes and professional staff employed by the Athletics Department complete the Sexual Assault Prevention for Student Athletes training annually. This training opportunity was specifically developed and designed for its target audience and is required under NCAA guidelines.

Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Awareness Month

In October or April of each year, the College plans a week of educational programing to increase the awareness and prevention of sexual assault. Programming includes a diverse speaker line-up, collaborations with YWCA-SARP, and a physical display of the Red Flag Campaign on campus.
